The Threefold Law — Why What You Send Out Always Comes Back
There’s been some conversation in the Wiccan community lately about the threefold law — specifically, whether it’s something worth believing in at all.
I want to share where I stand on it. Not to argue with anyone, but because I think it’s one of the most important principles in Wicca — and one of the most misunderstood.
What Is the Threefold Law?
If you’re new to Wicca, here’s the simple version: the threefold law means that whatever you send out into the world comes back to you threefold.
Send out kindness, generosity, healing energy? That returns to you multiplied. Send out harm, negativity, or ill intent? That returns to you multiplied too.
It’s not a punishment system. It’s more like a law of nature — as reliable and impersonal as gravity.
Do I Believe In It?
Absolutely. Without hesitation.
As a Wiccan, the harm none principle is the foundation of everything I do. I strive not to harm any person or anything — not because someone is watching and keeping score, but because I genuinely believe that harm sent out into the world finds its way back to the one who sent it.
The two principles are deeply connected. If you believe in harm none, the threefold law follows naturally. And if you don’t believe in the threefold law, you probably don’t feel bound by harm none either — which means you’ve removed the natural consequence of your own actions from the equation.
That’s a choice some practitioners make. But it’s not one I can make peace with.
The Littering Analogy
Let me explain how I actually think about this, because I think it makes the concept a lot more concrete.
Think about littering.
When you throw trash on the ground, you affect the world immediately around you. That beautiful place becomes a little less beautiful. Other people can’t enjoy it the way they should. Animals are affected. The environment absorbs something it shouldn’t have to. And the damage spreads outward in ways you never fully see or track.
Casting a negative spell works the same way — just with energy instead of trash.
When you send negative energy toward someone, it doesn’t just stop with them. It festers. It affects their mood, their relationships, the people around them. Those people carry it into their own interactions. It ripples outward, touching people further and further from the original source — amplifying as it goes.
And eventually, that energy finds its way back to you. Not in the same small form you sent it out. Amplified. Threefold.
The world is more connected than we realize. Energy doesn’t disappear — it travels.
The Temptation Is Real
I want to be honest with you here, because I think honesty serves you better than a polished performance of perfection.
Yes, I have been tempted to cast a negative spell on someone. I imagine most practitioners have been, if they’re being truthful with themselves.
Nobody is perfect — except our Lord. We are human, and humans get angry, get hurt, get pushed past their limits sometimes. The temptation to use what we know to strike back at someone who has wronged us is real.
But it’s a struggle I happily live with. Because the alternative — being concerned only with my own wants and needs, without regard for the consequences to others — is simply not acceptable to me. That’s not the witch I want to be. That’s not the person I want to be.
Choosing not to act on that impulse isn’t weakness. It’s one of the most powerful things a witch can do.
What To Do Instead
If you’re reading this and you’re angry at someone right now — genuinely hurt, genuinely wronged, genuinely tempted to do something about it magically — here’s my practical advice.
Take a step back before you act on that impulse. Just pause. Give yourself time to feel the emotion without immediately reaching for a response.
Then ask yourself: is there another way to affect a resolution here? One where nobody gets hurt? Almost always, there is. It might require more patience or more creativity than a spell, but it exists.
And sometimes — honestly, more often than I expected when I first started practicing — I just pray to our Lord for justice and let him take care of it.
That sounds simple. Maybe even like giving up. But it’s actually an act of profound trust. Trusting that justice doesn’t require my interference. Trusting that the threefold law is already doing its work without my help. Trusting that our Lord sees what happened and will handle it far more effectively than I ever could.
Letting go of the need to be the one who makes it right is its own kind of magic.
A Final Thought
The threefold law isn’t a limitation on your practice. It’s a protection for it.
It keeps you accountable. It keeps you thoughtful. It keeps you connected to the harm none principle in a real and meaningful way — not just as a nice idea, but as something with actual consequences.
When you understand that what you send out comes back amplified, you become very intentional about what you send out.
And that intentionality — that careful, conscious relationship with your own energy and its impact on the world around you — is what separates a powerful witch from a reckless one.
